Wind Turbines, Propellers and Fans

Wind turbines / propellers are large rotating systems that either generate power or produce thrust. The complexity in simulation of such machines is the rotating surfaces and the size. Many a wind turbines go upto 120 ft in diameter with small parts like spoilers on the surface too. Simulation of such large objects while resolving smaller components is a big challenge. Being hollow, the wind turbines also need analysis of structural stability while reducing weight. In case of propellers the effect of fuselage has to be accounted for.

ZN extensively researches in the area due to its importance and has developed capabilities in:

  1. Aerodynamic analysis using CFD
  2. Preliminary analysis using actuator disk theory
  3. Software for design of large axial fans (FanZ™)
  4. Structural design, stiffening and weight reduction studies
  5. Engineering for foundations, tower and other peripheral systems
  6. Site feasibility and development studies

ZN has estimated the performance of an aircraft propeller and the prediction was within 3% of the manufacturer guidance. Since CFD is costly for these systems, lesser accurate methods like actuator disk theory are first used to arrive at a reasonable design followed by rigorous analysis. Location of site for installation of wind turbines has also been studied using the available metrology data.
